I’m sitting in my herbal pharmacology lecture on Tuesday afternoon, but I can’t keep my mind on it. I know Sean will have picked James up from school for a driving lesson. So the second the lecture is over, I gather my books and race to get home. I park on the street outside my house, then lean against the bonnet and wait for Sean and James to get back. Sean has been ignoring all my calls and texts for over a week now. I want to apologise and try to make up.

The car pulls in, and my stomach does flips. I make my way to the passenger door and wait for James to get out of the driver’s side and go into the house. Eventually, Sean opens his door and gets out.

My voice shakes slightly when I say, “We need to talk.”

Sean rubs his chin. A scowl forms on his face. “Whatever. Let’s go to the park.”

We walk down the side streets towards the playground. I didn’t expect him to let me talk, and I don’t know what to say.

All I can come up with is, “I’m sorry.”

He waves his hand in a dismissive way, like he’s swatting away a fly. “This is fucked. You don’t come back from what you said.”

I lose it and start begging. “Please. I didn’t mean what I said. I need you to stay.”

Sean shakes his head. “Everything we did, you’d already been doing with other guys for years. I loved you and just wanted to make you feel good.”

He rakes his fingers through his hair as I open my mouth to say something, but Sean sighs and continues, “I grew up with abuse Bonnie, I know what it looks like, and we both know I never forced or hurt you. We have nothing to talk about anymore, this was a mistake.”

My stomach drops as I helplessly watch Sean turn back towards home and walk off. I keep going to the playground and sit on the same swings where he told me ten years earlier that he wouldn’t leave. I don’t know how to get back what we had.

I fucked everything up.
